The Maintenance Worker performs a variety of maintenance and utility duties for the hospital. Repair services of the facility’s physical plant and equipment and is guided by a general knowledge of building maintenance and the use of tools and basic maintenance supplies. Duties may include one or more of the following areas: mechanical, plumbing, electrical, carpentry or HVAC.


Essential Functions

  • Performs a variety of duties in maintaining, repairing operating and cleaning of the plant, exterior grounds, and campus facilities.
  • Assist in making decisions on all normal & minor repairs and reports major problems.
  • Cleans sidewalk and parking areas, picks up and disposes of trash, polices grounds for litter, debris, branches, and similar items. Operates equipment assigned to complete those tasks, whether electrical or gasoline motor driven.
  • Maintains and performs minor repairs to equipment, which is needed to complete his assigned task, and building areas, using power and hand tools and other necessary equipment.
  • Performs a variety of other unskilled or semi-skilled tasks such as minor carpentry, plumbing, welding, painting, minor electrical work, sheet metal work, masonry and drywall maintenance.
  • Analyze and repair basic building and grounds maintenance problems, alone or as part of a team.
  • Performs a variety of building services duties.
  • Responds to emergency problems in the facility and makes emergency repairs as needed.
  • Performs similar basic maintenance duties on any shift as assigned and contact supervisors, skilled trade vendors, or on-call personnel as instructed.
  • Maintains logs, performs rounds, and completes maintenance work orders, tests, and inspections.
  • Maintains hospital and camps grounds, shops and mechanical areas in clean and safe manner.
  • Serves as a member of facility’s fire response team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Follows HCCA rules, policies, procedures, applicable laws, and standards.

Experience, Education & Competency Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent, preferred.
  • General understanding of simple tools and maintenance equipment.
  • One (1) year related experience as Maintenance utility worker or technician in a similar sized institution or in grounds maintenane occupation.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and transmit complicated simple intructions in writing or orally.
  • Able to work under pressure in a professional manner.      
  • Able to make decisions using discretion and independent judgment.
  • Able to prioritize, multi-task and manage time to meet deadlines and time constraints.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must work well with all levels of persons and personalities
