Responsibilities

Under the direction and in collaboration with the CNO and the Infection Control Committee, the Infection Preventionist reinforces and implements all clinical activities associated with Infection Prevention and Control for the facility.

 

Essential Functions

  • Complies with regulatory agencies, such as, Joint Commission, DNV, OSHA, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, local, state, and national Public Health Services.
  • Surveys the hospital for the presence of Healthcare Associated (nosocomial) infections (HAI), and communicable diseases.
  • Analyzes such data for outbreak clusters and preventable infections; makes recommendations to the Infection Control Team and staff where appropriate.
  • Assures hospital Infection Control policies and procedures are adhered to as well as a standard of practice best able to prevent and or reduce the incidence of Health Care Associated Infections (HAI).
  • Bases decisions and actions on relevant scientific principles, evidence-based practice, standards of care, and research findings.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources to ensure completion of  all health screenings. 
  • Conducts surveillance and follow-up of employee exposures to communicable diseases.
  • Plans, implements, and conducts annual flu vaccination program and annual TB screening.
  • Plans and implements other vaccine programs as directed by APIC, OSHA, CDC, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Trends employee illnesses/injuries to identify safety and health issues.
  • Recommends and monitors appropriate clinical follow-up for blood borne pathogen exposures related to needle-sticks.
  • Provides education on infection control practices to new employees; current employees on an annual basis, and as needed based on deficiencies in practice identified through routine surveillance.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

Experience, Education & Competency Requirements

  • Current California Licensed as a Registered Nurse
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Basic Assoication of Professionals in Infection Control Training Course in Infection Control within six (6) months of the initiation of the position or certification is required.
  • Five (5) years’ experience in an acute care setting, working in a variety of units.
  • Working Knowledge of principles of epidemology and infection control required.
  • Ability to work autonomously under the direction of CNO.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to make decisions using discretion and independent judgment.
  • Able to troubleshoot and be resourceful in resolving any problems or issues that arise.
  • Able to prioritize, multi-task and manage time to meet deadlines and time constraints.
  • Ability to work supervise others as needed. 
  • Must work well with all levels of persons and personalities.
