Responsibilities

Under general supervision, the Cath Lab Rad Tech provides technical support and assistance to the physician during diagnostic and invasive/interventional cardiovascular.  Peripheral vascular and interventional radiologic procedures. Performs scrub and hemodynamic monitoring duties with cardiac catheterizations (both diagnostic and interventional), vascular and interventional radiology procedures using clinical knowledge, technical skills, and professional judgement in accordance with professional and departmental standards and protocols. Provides care assessment prior, during and post procedural instruction to patients. Prepares and maintains all pertinent information related to procedures.

 

  • Assists Cardiologist in performance of invasive diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures. Maintains operational knowledge of CCL equipment according to manufacturer’s specifications.     This includes but is not limited to IVUS/FFR, fluoroscopy, and hemodynamic monitoring systems.
  • Assists the Interventional Radiologist in the performance of invasive diagnostic and interventional radiology procedures.  Maintains operational knowledge of the CCL equipment according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.  This includes but is not limited to fluoroscopy, Angiojet, High Pressure Injectors and hemodynamic monitoring systems
  • Provides care for patients prior, during and after procedures. Scrubs and assists Cardiologist and Radiologists as requested.
  • Responds to patient distress situations (e.g., rapid response and Code Blue), adhering to ACLS guidelines within the scope of practice. 
  • Assists with equipment quality control and inventory management. Prepares sterile trays, instruments, supplies and equipment necessary for procedures, and maintains sterile field.
  • Provides all appropriate services to safely and efficiently complete patient’s procedures. Maintains knowledge of cardiac concepts and clinical practices inclusive of vascular sheath pulls.
  • Responsible for patient safety in the CCL and must be able to recognize cardiac arrhythmias and respond according to emergency protocols, operate external/internal cardiac pacemaker and defibrillator. Intervenes with appropriate therapy in the event of cardiac emergencies.
  • Properly handles and processes CVIS/Hemo images/data to include storage and transfer. Follows radiation safety policies as outlined by Title 17 of the California Code of Regulations, the NRC and Hospital’s Radiation Safety Committee.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots, and operates fluoroscopy equipment to ensure operability and safety. Selects appropriate exposure factors and monitors the equipment calibration and performs routine quality assurance and preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Monitors and records patients' hemodynamic status during procedures, and assists the cardiologist and radiologist as needed.
  • Acts as patient educator.  Explains procedure and answers questions prior to the procedure.
  • Positions patients as needed and adheres to the principles of ALARA relevant to radiation safety procedures.
  • Selects and operates equipment as needed to perform required exams.
  • Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department
  • Assumes an active role in maintaining optimum quality and participates in Quality Assurance tasks and Performance Improvement goals.

 

Qualifications

Experience, Education & Competency Requirements/Qualifications

  • Have an Associate of Science degree or equivalent level of education
  • Must work well with all levels of persons and personalities. 
  • Graduate from an approved school of radiologic technology.
  • Certification as an ARRT
  • Certification as a Certified Radiologic Technologist in general radiography and fluoroscopy
  • ACLS/Professional and BLS certifications required on hire, or prior to completion of orientation;
  • 2-3 years clinical experience in diagnostic and/or interventional cardiac catheterization lab preferred
  • Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) certification preferred; Must obtain within 24 months of employment
  • Understanding of Cerner EMR functions preferred
  • Participates in educational conferences and updates and maintains professional knowledge and skills related to areas of responsibility;
  • Available to fulfill “on-call” obligations-response less than 30 minutes as requested and in rotation with other Cath Lab personnel
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in basic cardiac Anatomy/Physiology, 12-Lead EKG interpretation; physiologic monitoring (intra cardiac pressure waveform knowledge), pacemaker operations (implantable and external), radiographic equipment and other devices related to cardiac and interventional radiology care such as power injectors, IABP, IVUS/FFR, etc.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.
