Position Summary

Performs the primary functions of a Registered Nurse in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the care of all patients in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab (CCL) during his or her shift.  Is responsible for meeting the established standards of Intensive Nursing Practice, for managing all assigned personnel, supplies, and equipment in the unit, and for promoting teamwork with physicians and personnel of other departments.  Under general supervision, performs professional nursing, technical and administrative duties as they relate to the cardiac catheterization lab as assigned. Performs hemodynamic monitoring duties before, during and after  diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures, and peripheral vascular, and interventional radiology procedures using clinical knowledge, technical skills, and professional judgment in accordance with professional and departmental standards and protocols. Provides care, assessment prior, during and post-procedural instruction to patients.  Prepares and maintains all pertinent information related to procedures.


Essential Functions

  • Assesses the number and level of personnel needed to provide quality patient care in the CCL and collaborates with the Cath Lab Director (or designee) or Nursing Supervisor in adjusting staffing and assignments.
  • Assesses the delivery of nursing care in the CCL and identifies problems and any need for improvements.
  • Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment.  Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
  • Assesses the health care status of all assigned patients in the CCL as outlined in the nursing standards
  • Recognizes and assesses initial/slight alterations in the patient’s body system
  • Monitors and interprets patient’s vital signs (i.e., BP, HR/Rhythm, O2 Saturation etc. and assesses for changes, communicating this information with members of the healthcare team
  • Organizes assessment data so they are accurate, complete and accessible, while maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Communicates assessment data in an orderly fashion by reporting, revising, communicating pertinent information among members of the health team.  Thoroughly documents all findings in the patient’s medical record.



Experience, Education & Competency Requirements/Qualifications

  • Associate of Science or equivalent level of education
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent level of education, preferred.
  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
  • Current licensure in the state of California
  • ACLS/Professional BLS certifications required on hire
  • Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) certification preferred; must obtain within 24 months of employment.
  • 2 years nursing experience required with diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization procedures, preferred.
  • 2 years nursing experience in critical care ICU and/or ED
  • Specific orientation to the Cardiac Catheterization Lab and Cath Lab Holding Area
  • Pursues programs of continuing education consistent with requirements of the California Nurses’ Association
  • Participates in educational conferences and updates and maintains professional knowledge and skills related to areas of responsibility
  • Understanding of Cerner EMR functions preferred
  • Available to fulfill “on-call” obligations with response time 30 minutes as requested.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in basic cardiac physiology/pathology, 12-Lead EKG interpretation; physiologic monitoring (intra cardiac pressure waveform knowledge), pacemaker operations (implantable and external) and other equipment related to cardiac care.
  • Ability to use hemodynamic monitoring equipment as requested/assigned.
  • Must work well with all levels of persons and personalities
  • Additional duties may be assigned.
