Responsibilities

The Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant I check orders for accuracy and completeness. Draws blood from patients for Laboratory testing using commonly accepted techniques, appropriate tubes, and proper post-phlebotomy care.  Takes orders and answers questions over the phone. Enters orders in the hospital computer system. Performs typing and filing duties as needed, and is responsible for the separation and proper distribution of Laboratory reports. Inoculates Microbiology and Quality Control specimens to appropriate media and incubates them in the required conditions. Processes Microbiology specimens for referral. Prepares slides and performs staining procedures. Stocks general laboratory and the microbiology department as needed.  Oversees the orientation and training of phlebotomy interns and Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant new hires.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Performs typing and filing duties as needed
  • Ensures adequate supplies and that equipment is in working order or is designated for repair.
  • Practices good safety habits, identifies, and reports unsafe conditions.
  • Practices proper Infection Control guidelines as recommended by the CDC.
  • Appearance reflects hospital and departmental dress code.
  • Computer and typing skills

 

Successful candidate must have:

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent required.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare-provider environment preferred.
  • Current CPR Certification
  • California Phlebotomy Technician (CPT-1)
