Responsibilities

Surgical technicians, assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel.  Surgical technicians are members of operating room teams, which most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses.

 

Before an operation, surgical technicians help prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, maintaining a sterile field, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions.  They apply and maintain sterile technique to all surgeries.  They have a working knowledge of anatomy and physiology as applied to surgical procedures.  They assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment, as well as, check and adjust it to ensure that it is working properly.

 

During surgery technicians pass instruments an d other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants.  They may hold retractors, cut sutures, and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.  Surgical technicians help prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken fro laboratory analysis and help apply dressings.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent required.
  • Good physical and mental health; able to work under pressure and relate to patients, family, hospital staff, and visitors in a professional manner.   
  • One (1) year of clinical rotation thru HCCA training program, preferred
  • Maintains current National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgacil Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • Current CPR card.
  • Ability to communicate in the English language
